- TitleFitzherbert, Paris to Grantham, London (most private) The language of French Minister in regard to the negotiation has been "so mild and moderate" in the last two conferences that Fitzherbert has had with him that it seem hardly possible that "not ten days are elapsed since I saw him put his hand to that most intemperate performance" as enclosed in No 81. French Minister has doubts of Grantham's and Lord Shelburne's desire for peace. Fitzherbert asks Grantham to speak with M. de Rayneval about the matter. Reports that Grantham has had of this Minister's being "much thwarted in the Cabinet are undoubtedly true, M. de Castries being his declared, and Madame. de Polignue his secret enemy". However he has a great many friends so is unlikely to lose his place. Believes it originated from the "circumstance of M. de Bretuiel, who has long been a candidate for the employment".
