Grantham, St. James's to Fitzherbert, Paris (private) Anxiously await answers from France, Spain and Holland and the conclusion of the American Treaty. "The Treaty as they sent it over last was perfectly unlike anything that ever was proposed...irregularities in every sentence. I hope the present Form, tho' by no means perfect, will be accepted, or at least admitted, as a groundwork for future Correction". It is impossible that anything like preliminaries could come now before the meeting of Parliament. The most to be hoped for is the receipt of ultimatums. "The Eyes of the Publick are looking with great impatience to the Opening of the Sessions; And if we are not near an Understanding with our Enemies, there is no answering for the vague, unreasonable checks with may come from every Quarter, to the Perfection of a Work which is certainly on every Account so desirable". Forwards a précis of all that passed on the St. Eustatia business and a copy of the Grenada merchant's memorial (not present).
