Fitzherbert, Paris to Grantham (private and most secret) Refers to Grantham's letter of 23 September. Fitzherbert has managed to have the words in the Note Confidentielle referring to Shelburne amended. Has talked over with Rayneval the business of Mr Walpole's negotiations with Mr de Castries - de Vergennes is ready to co-operate in taking the business out of Castries's hands. Will see the Spanish Ambassador tomorrow or day after to talk about Grantham's No 9. M. d'Aranda and Fitzherbert have not met since the British success at Gibraltar. Encloses letter from Rayneval to Grantham (not present).
