- TitleGrantham, St. James's to Fitzherbert, Paris (private, copy) Hopes that the delay in sending official dispatches will not be misinterpreted. It would be "difficult for M. de Vergennes perhaps to persuade the world he was in haste" for peace "till the fate of Gibraltar is decided". As stated in Grantham's public letter, there is "no Idea of precluding an arrangement regarding Newfoundland". As for the other island France wishes - that is a concession the ministers jointly must agree to. No instructions can be given on the other points. Fears Mr Oswald's proposals will not come up to expectations. The offer is fair and goes as far as Britain's laws allow.
