  • Title
Grantham, St. James's to Fitzherbert, Paris (No 5, Copy) Encloses a précis of the correspondence in 1775 and 1776 on the subject of the Newfoundland Fishery. Upon complaint of some damages suffered by the French from English fishermen, the case was settled to the "entire satisfaction" of the Court of France. This incident gave rise to a proposal on the part of France for obtaining some coast on Newfoundland. Lord Rochford did not encourage it. Lord Weymouth entirely declined it. Encloses a state of the present question with observations. The grant to the French of an island in sovereignty is a point of too much importance to be answered until it comes forward in a more formal shape.
