  • Title
Torrington, Brussels to Grantham Congratulates Grantham on his appointment and asks him to pity those such as he "who have failed in all their prospects, hopes and expectations". Lord Rockingham's death has "blasted" all Torrington's plans of returning home and settling there with credit. "The active zealous conduct of Mr Geo Byng ... was an Additional weight in my scale and the friendship and strong recommendations of the D. of Portland". Torrington remains with his family in a "deplorable situation! my income is so small I cannot enjoy the common comforts of Life & Educate my five children suitable to their Birth". He has applied to others in the past with no result and now writes to Grantham "as an old friend" and requests that he may be employed as Envoy Extraordinary or Minister Plenipotentiary on full pay, preferably in the South.
