  • Title
Elliot, Berlin to Grantham, St. James's Grantham's letter of 29th October did not reach Elliot until late in November and he was unable in less than three weeks after that date to finish his private concerns in Prussia. Elliot will leave Mr Ferguson as Charge des Affairs and meet Elliot at Hamburg which is in both men's direction. He can then get to Copenhagen as quickly as a courier in case of urgent business. The passage is "particularly inconvenient" in winter as ice boats do not admit carriages. Elliot's brother, Sir Gilbert, is ill and has set out for the South of France. Lady Elliot is at the late stages of pregnancy and expects to lie in at Lyons. Elliot does not wish to move to a place where the posts are very precarious in winter until he has received more accounts of his brother's health. Should Sir Gilbert die, Elliot would be required to go to England. Elliot will go to Hamburg as soon as possible but hopes Grantham will require him to do whatever necessary should he receive bad news.
