Extract of letter from Grantham, St. James's to Walpole, Lisbon (draft, private) M. de Pinto has informed Grantham of the assent of his court to the Neutral Code of Russia. He pretended that Portugal was driven into the measure by pressure from Spain. M. de Pinto requires an explanation of the principles upon which the Court of Appeals confirmed a decree of the Court of Admiralty against the Dutch Gildemeester. Grantham replied he could not answer such a request when the tribunal had given sentence. Some Irish merchants have heard from Oporto that their goods would be received on the same footing of British goods. Walpole is to clarify the matter. Grantham has heard that "my Friend Fernananez is a most active Spaniard, &, conjointly with his French colleague, does us a great deal of mischief". Grantham wishes to know Madrid's impression of the repulse before Gibraltar.
