  • Title
Liston, Turin to Grantham, London Expresses gratitude to Grantham for being named Secretary to the Embassy to Spain. It gives Liston "pain to have interfered on this occasion with Mr Munro". Mentions a circumstance that has caused him uneasiness. Liston had spoken of his hopes of accompanying Mountstuart to Spain as Secretary to the Sardinian Minister. The following day Count Perron told Liston that the King of Sardinia was extremely unwilling to see Liston leave and wished to make an application to the Court of London to allow Liston to remain as British Minister. Although Liston answered in a way which he thought would have prevented the matter being carried any further, he finds reason to believe M. de Cordon had been instructed to make some overture. Liston's "obligations and attachment to Lord Mountstuart preclude acceptance of any Employment (were it in my offer) which would separate me from him".
