Grantham, St. James's to Lord Mountstuart, Turin (No 9, draft) Acknowledges receipt of letter. Permission is granted for Mountstuart to return to England. The treaty for delivering criminals between Spain and the Republic of Genoa would be a very good model for such an agreement between Britain and the Republic. It "is much to be hoped that few if any abuses arise from the protection which the British flag, when resorted to, always affords". It is necessary to have enquiries made at Genoa in order to know the "extent of the Evil complained of". Emigrants from Genoa have been offered asylum in Ireland. The Duke of Leimster and the Earl of Ely have offered sums of money, estates and dwellings and M. D'Juernois has been given the task of negotiating. The King approves of Mountstuart's intelligence gathering especially regarding preparations against Gibraltar. Also of the "Notion entertained by the Ministers of your Court, upon the Posture of affairs between the Emperor & the Czarina". Czarina is "bent upon a Turkish War & expects more assistance from the Emperor than I have reason to think he is inclin'd to lend". The Emperor will not embark on projects which might affect his close connection with France. His Imperial Majesty's journey to Florence and Naples is "very confidently talked of at Vienna". It may be due to a desire for change of air or a wish to be acquainted with the Grand Duke of Tuscany's eldest son. Any action of the Emperor against Italy will give a "great degree of umbrage to the Spanish branch of the House of Bourbon" as well as to the Court where Mountstuart resides. Grantham has informed the Archbishop of Canterbury of the King of Sardinia's permission to the protestant Vaudois to repair their church near Pignerot.
