  • Title
Grantham, St. James's to Sir Horace Mann, Florence (No 6, draft) The King is pleased with Mann's attention and diligence. Mann's "offices in favour of Count Viscoich taken in the Fly Cutter and of the crew of the Xebeque General Elliot were exceedingly proper". The answers which Abbi Vernacini and Chevalier Monino returned have gone "as far as situation would warrant". Grantham proposes to put the matter to Count Aranda via Fitzherbert at Paris. Has seen the two Peruvians Mann recommended and has recommended them to Mr Townshend. The account given to Mann of the King of Spain's views on the independency of America is the same "as has been consistently given from the first". Is not surprised at the attempt of the French Court to "indispose" the Grand Duke against Britain. The "Spirit of Intrigue which so universally animates their Conduct of the French...may in some Instances be successfull, but I hope will not meet with a favourable Reception at a Court, who has at present nothing to gain but to lose, by taking any, but a fair & neutral Part".
