Harris, St. Petersburg to Grantham (private) Thanks Grantham for his letter of 28th January. Harris's wish for leaving the court is due to his health. Has been unwell again. If he cannot leave St Petersburg by August he runs a great risk of never leaving it "without being embalmed". The conclave may elect the Cardinal who will fill papal chair with "dignity, knowledge & experience". Harris is pleased with Grantham's choice for the Bourbon missions. He is particularly interested in the nomination of Lord Mounstuart and Liston. Munro should be satisfied with being restored to the Consulship. Liston is "one of the ablest Englishmen abroad". Princess Daskoff has been nominated the Director of the Academy. The Empress could not have chosen a better person. Encloses a speech which Princess Daskoff made on taking possession of her new place. Often sees Mr Yorke - "an amiable young man". Hope Grantham's gout and nervous attack has left him.
