Grantham, St. James's to Harris (Marked 'Cy') Harris's dispatches "leave little room to expect a continuation of Peace between the Russian & Ottoman Empires". Warlike preparations point to greater things than "the mere arrangement of the Crimean Troubles". The disasters at Constantinople and the state of the Turkish government may tempt the Empress to prosecute her plans even if she does not have the entire support of the Emperor. Accounts from Vienna do not reveal any preparations for an immediate war. As Prince Kaunitz has not been pressing on the subject of the mediation Grantham hopes he has ceased in his attempts to create jealousy on that matter with the Czarina. "Any degree of confidence which M. de Vergennes may be disposed to show towards M. de Baratinshi may answer an artfull Purpose, but surely ought not to create a suspicion, that Mr Fitzherbert is less open to the Russian Minister at Paris than he should be". Grantham has received accounts from Constantinople of the exchange of the treaty between Spain and the Porte. Knows of the jealousy felt by Spain when they first saw a Russian fleet in the Mediterranean.
