- TitleGrantham, St. James's to Harris, St Petersburg (Draft, No 16) Refers to M. de Goertz and a letter from Potsdam of 6th July which Goertz showed Harris. Grantham draws a different conclusion in one respect - upon the time on which the Quadruple Alliance is intended by the Prussian King to take place. Grantham has good reason to believe that the King of Prussia means it to take effect after a peace. The degree to which Britain accedes to the Empresses wishes is "a very weighty one" and the offers detailed Mr Fox's No 9 went as far as could be expected. Refers to business being conducted at Paris through Mr Fitzherbert. Mr Grenville's departure is a result of a request to be recalled following Mr Fox's resignation. As consequence of Fitzherbert's first conference with M. de Vergennes, the latter eventually undertook to prepare an explanation of the vague Paper of 21st June. Grantham has "no reason to expect a Diminution of the first general Propositions" and feels that the "Siege of Gibraltar will much influence the preliminary Negotiations". The French are preparing for another campaign and are in real want of money.
