Harris, St. Petersburg to Mr Fox (copy, private) Congratulates Fox on being nominated Secretary of State. Harris professes readiness to quit his post. While he was courting the friendship of Prince Potemkin he was attempting to destroy the interest of Count Panin. He had the confidence of Prince Potemkin and "played no small part" in driving Panin from his office. A "revolution in the political doctrines of Pce Potemkin" now places him in his present situation. Harris' first wish is to return home and receive a pension. He has been absent for fourteen years and has served His Majesty faithfully at Madrid, Berlin and Petersburg. Requests that a pension may be settled on him for his life and that of his eldest son. He wishes most of all to be named as one of the Ministers to negotiate peace with the Dutch (if the negotiations ever take place).
