- TitleStatement of oath of Benjamin Harper of Carlton, yeoman, that: - he was 78, had been born in Carlton and lived there nearly all his life; - he knew William Nichols, formerly of Carlton, farmer and his sister Margaret, widow of Joseph Pendred, formerly of Eaton Socon, yeoman; - he knew William Pendred, son of Joseph and Margaret; - he believed William Nichols and Margaret Pendred to be the only children of Roger Nichols, formerly of Carlton; - that Margaret Pendred died before William Nichols and that William Nichols died about 40 years before; - he remembered over 60 years before William Nichols was proprietor of a cottage, orchard or pightle of pasture in Carlton which he occupied; - that the deponent sometimes occupied William Nichols' cottage as a tenant, the other part of the cottage being occupied by John Gilbert; - towards the end of his life William Nichols occupied the cottage himself, with his sister and her son; - William Nichols, a few years before his death, pulled down the old cottage, building a new one which was now occupied as three tenements occupied by Elizabeth Steff, Joseph Harris and William Hartwell and a bakehouse late occupied by Robert Tressler, now [blank] Mardling; - that William Nichols established his nephew William Pendred in the bakehouse as baker; - William Nichols was twice married, his second wife having been Elizabeth Lambert, but had no children; - after the death of William Nichols, William Pendred inherited his real estate until he sold it to Thomas Pinkerd, late of Turvey, deceased, about 30 years before Sworn before William Hooper, Justice of the Peace
