    Examinations and depositions: Information of Joseph Willis, Bedford, gent. regarding theft of fowls from his farmyard at Goldington, by Jas. Gooding and Wm. Gardiner. Information of Jn. Lavender, Bedford, labourer who was set to watch his master's fowls on a Sunday morning, saw J.G. put a fowl in his pocket. He approached J.G. who gave it back to him and begged him not to tell his master and "pleaded his large family as his excuse". Examination of Jas. G. who said he was gathering sloes "to be used as a medicine for one of his children who is ill"; that a fowl came through the hedge - that he thought it was a stray fowl and therefore he put it into his pocket. Examination of Wm. Gardiner who was in Mr. Willis'. farmyard and "wished to have kept my dog from chasing the fowls". He was also gathering sloes as a medicine. (See QSR1816/185, 187, 414.)
