- TitleLetter from David Willis at Leighton Buzzard to William Wallis at 128 Cheapside, London: "Yesterday I received yours and Mr.Wootton's Letter wherein you "direct me to call a Special Court and say it may be held at Ampthill there Mr.Wootton will give me the meeting, that the Surrender must be ready at the same time for him to sign and then sent to you to compleat, that Mr.Gotobed will send to the Steward for a power of attorney to accept your Surrender and that you need not be present at the Court". You will excuse me when I say you both have a little mistaken this Business, if I call the Court it must be held within the manor of Woburn (and not at Ampthill) then and there Mr.Wootton's attendance will be unnecessary and useless and the surrender cannot be taken then unless you are both there, you cannot sign it afterwards it must be taken by the Steward his Deputy or two copyholders according to the Custom of the Manor and the Power of Attorney you mention Mr.Gotobed will get to accept the Surrender, it is not so but is a deputation from the Steward to take the Surrender from both you when Mr.Wootton is in Town. Previous to my calling a Special Court I must have a Letter of Attorney from both you so to do and in that Letter of Attorney the estates must be particularized and previous to which I beg you will see Mr.Gotobed and that he or you particularly state to me what is to be done with that estate of which the Term is expired and that you are not to renew. "Yesterday I also received a Letter from Mr.Gotobed saying he had seen you that it was necessary for you to be admitted that I was to have a Special Court be admitted as your attorney to send him Copy of the admission and he would then prepare a deputation to take the Surrender and use all Expedition". From this you will see Mr.Gotobed and myself concur in opinion and the only thing that rests with me to have cleared up is as I have stated what is to be done with the Estate of which the Term is expired and that you are not to renew or pay a Fine for or have a new Grant, wait your answer".
