- Scope and ContentWill made beseeching God “of his Mercie that it may be conformable to his will”. Soul to God almighty, to our lady St. Mary and all the saints and body to Christian burial. To altar of church of Sandey 4d.; to upkeep of the church 4d.. To son Henry Alderige £6 13s. 4d. out of her goods as follows, that is one featherbed and bolster, two pillows, one pillowbere and coverlet of darnix, one coffer, a painted cloth tester, 3 pair of sheets of which one has a black seam, a flaxen table cloth, a towel, a board for a table, the painted cloth in the hall, a cradle, a great turned chair, the best brass pot, the best brass kettle, and all this stuff is to be appraised by two honest men, and any of the money lacking is to be made up out of her other goods and given to Henry at his age of 18 years. To daughter Alis Alderiche the tester of a bed of white cloth with “thranes”, a flaxen table cloth, a sheet with a white seam in the midst, three towels, one table cloth of hemp, 3 pillows, 2 pillowberes, 2 coffers and coverlet of carpet work, one woollen blanket and all the painted cloths in the chamber, one cupboard, a “folte” table, 2 little brass pots, 2 old kettles, a frying pan, a little spit, a gridiron, 8 pewter platters, 3 pewter dishes, 4 pewter porringers, 2 painted pots of pewter, two old salts of pewter, one old chafing dish of latten, 2 old candlesticks of latten, one little turned chair and testator’s cloth gown. All this is to be appraised by two honest men along with the two oxen and other stuff bequeathed to the said Alis by her father the said William Alderiche, and if all her legacies do not amount to the sum of £6 13s. 4d., then her executor to make up the same sum out of testator’s goods, and the girl to receive it at the age of 14 years. To testator’s sister Alis Weston one acre of the best rye “one greyse” in the field; to Henry Leighton her said sister’s son one half acre of rye “one greiste”. To every other of her sister’s children 12d. each. To her servant Margret one half acre of rye “on greste”, one kettle of brass, one pillow, one pillowbere, a red kirtle, a table cloth, a towel, a white apron, 2 smocks, one shirt. Residue to be used to bring up her children, and her brother–in-law Roger Alderidge to be her executor. Witnesses sir Thomas Battes curate of Sutton, Roger Spense, Thomas Skylliter, William Brydeler.
