Folio 70 - John Alen of St. Mary’s, Bedford, smith, made 15 Mar.1556/7 pr. 15 June 1557. Soul to God almighty, our blessed lady St. Mary and the holy company of heaven, and body to be buried where it shall please his curate and Helyn his wife. To the church of Lincoln 2d.. To his curate for tithes forgotten 4d.. To every godchild 1d.. To his sister Agnes Everut 20s. either in money or in stuff, as “it shall please my wiffe”. To servant Henry Day the vice that stands next to the shop door, a dozen files, a pair of pincers, a shoeing hammer and a “byltanre”. To wife Helen the copyhold of his house which she can have for the specified years. Residue of goods to his wife, and she sole executrix, and he asks his curate and his godson Umffrey Lawrence to be her helpers. Witnesses John Cowper, Robert Herberd, Richard Pety and others.
