  • Title
    Papers relating to incident at William Odell's, Water Bailiff of Water Lane, Sandy, house. A large crowd arrived making a great disturbance with tin kettles and started pelting the house with stones. He said that James Crawley, Market Gardener of Sandy, Henry Endersby, 18 of Beeston, James Oxford, Bootmaker of Sandy, John Clarke, Porter at Sandy station and Charles Gilbert, Labourer of Everton were all involved in breaking down the front door, breaking windows and finally breaking down the back door using railway sleepers. He said they threw in two sleepers, a hurdle, a pig trough, brick bats, 100 stones, an old boiler, manure and all kinds of rubbish. He said that Harry Hull, Solicitor's Clerk of Sandy, had a Bulls Eye lantern to light the party and keep the light on Odell. They threatened to pull Odell down the river. Evidence of Allen Brown, 12 yrs son of Elizabeth Brown, widow of Beeston. Mr Fisher, overseer of Sandy was heard to call out to 'fetch Odell out'. Evidence of Frederick Jeeves, 16 son of Fanny Jeeves of Beeston. Evidence of other witnesses, including Joseph Farr who lived opposite the Church in Sandy, William Miller Fisher, Assistant Overseer of Sandy, William Matthews, John Edwin Willoughby, Watchmaker, John Banfield and William George Martin.
