- TitleLetter From Elizabeth Kendall of 18 Southampton St., of Pentonville, London To Mr Skidmore Written to him as "acting" friend of Albans MM "In July 1805 a relation of my husbands nam'd Mary Kendall of the Society of Friends having been twelve months in St. Luke's Hospital a Lunatic and discharged without amendment, it was thought advisable to place her at the Retreat, near York, for whose board and maintanance we paid 8/- per week and were very happy to have her so comfortably accomodated. In the year 1810 our circumstances were unexpectedly impaired, & upon application to the Retreat, the Friends.. reduced her expences one half" paid 4/- regularly to last April "though with difficulty being now left a widow with a young family to educate but from the loss of much property since my Husband's death am titally unable to continue to maintain her at even this low charge" Mary no property of her own left a legacy by her father of £50 - Eliz Kendall's husband executor but more than £150 paid to the Retreat kept her for several yrs before she had to be confined Applied to Mr Tuke who directed her to apply to Albans MM (Mary belonging there) - provision made in institution for support for those whom relatives cannot support. "Convinced she cannot be so well taken care of in any other asylum".
