"If ... you assume an undue superiority over us, if instead of being helpers of our joy you pretend to lord it over our faith and think to terrify us by thundering out anathemas, suspensions and excommunications against us, we tell you before hand plainly and faithfully, that we defy your menaces, and despise your censures - we know that the curse causeless shall not come, and they will produce no other effect than to confirm us in the opinion of propriety and necessity of the separation in which we are engaged .... Yours in gospel bonds, The Separatists." A note at the bottom of the page says "N.B. This letter was not sent, as once intended."
