- TitleInformation of Charles Vaughan, farmer of Stotfold that Elizabeth Mary Cotton, came to his front door and asked his wife if she would buy anything. She refused, the defendant then asked for some bread and butter. My wife replied that we had nothing to give away. The defendant then began swearing and abusing his wife and went out of the front gate. She returned later to the back door and asked the farmer if he would but anything; she was very abusive. He sent for the police. She then took up her basket and started to go across the meadow. The farmer called some of his men to stop her and she stripped off her clothes to the waist. PC Short arrived and took her in charge. She appeared to be drunk..PC George Short declared that he took Elizabeth Mary Cotton into custody on the charge of begging. She was very drunk and violent.
