Title
Claims for Compensation
These files usually relate to claims by farmers regarding a loss made by them from converting pasture land to arable land and the crop subsequently failing. The War Agricultural Committee would either enter into, take possession of and break up the land in question or instruct the owner or tenant to break it up. The claim was usually successful, though the amount awarded would not usually match that claimed. Unsuccessful claims are noted as such. Each file generally includes a valuation of the land affected, correspondence on the matter and other relevant reports such as the state of the land, farming methods to be employed and success or otherwise of the crop planted - any additional matters are noted in the individual entry. Note: that some files deal with other circumstances and do not always involve a claim, such circumstances may include, for example, the War Agricultural Executive Committee determining a tenancy since they considered that the tenant had farmed the land in an unsatisfactory manner or from the issue of a Land Drainage Order. A file is assumed to relate to a claim for compensation for breaking up grassland unless specifically noted otherwise. The original file number (as noted in WW1/AC/OP 2/1) is noted in brackets after the relevant entry.
