Letter from A. Turner Marshall of 67 Mortimer Street, Herne Bay, [Kent], solicitor to F. Tanqueray of Woburn, Beds, solicitor…'I have today made enquiries about Dytham which I regret to say have not elicited anything very favourable. I am informed in the first place that there is very little furniture on the premises to whomsever it belongs. I cannot confirm the wife's claim to the furniture but I am told Mr Fife, Dytham's Father-in-Law has helped him financially at times and very probably he bought the furniture when Dytham married his daughter. Dytham has recently been summoned for rates and at the hearing stated on oath that he was not tenant of Greenhill Farm but was merely bailiff for his father-in-law. I have ascertained that it is true the owners would not accept Dytham as tenant. Dytham paid the late tenant for goodwill of his business by cheques which were met. He used to bank at Lloyds Bank at Deal and now banks with Parr's here. It appears that when distress was threatened upon Greenhill Farm for one quarter's rent during Dytham's occupancy M. Woodruff paid the rent by cheque - so he may have held the goods mentioned in clause 2 of your letter and subsequently sold them to Mr Fife. As regards Mr Downes I can ascertain nothing. Mr Fife is stated to be a man of property and he might meet this claim if his son-in-law is pressed but I do not know. Mr Dytham has only been at Greenhill a little over 12 months. Mr Dytham has a good milk round there but that of course is somewhat intangible. I put my costs down at 10/6d and regret I cannot report more favourably'.
