Papers relating to legal proceedings in the County Court holden at Newport Pagnell between Emma Elisabeth Sturges and Nathaniel Sturges the executors of the will of Barnard Charnock Sturges deceased (Plaintiffs) and Frederic Titman (Defendant) concerning unpaid debts. Including: - Detailed particulars of claim, including unpaid costs for live and farm stock such as pigs & horses. Amounting in total to £41/2/3. - Notice that Frederic Tanqueray of Woburn, Beds has ceased to be the plaintiff's solicitor and the present solicitor is James Webber of Ampthill, Beds. - Notice listing the documents that the plaintiffs propose to use as evidence during the proceedings. - Notice requiring the defendant to produce all documents in his possession relating to the matter at trial. - Statement by Reuben Lancaster… 'I live at Salford and am a groom gardener and was in the employ of deceased for about 6 years prior to his death. Before being in the employ of the deceased I was continually going to the farm and was well acquainted with the groom, as he lived next door to me. He pointed out to me a Chestnut Horse which had been blistered and said it belonged to the Defendant and had been sent there to keep. This horse was kept in the stable and fed with corn and hay. I have seen the groom feed it on several occasions. After I entered the service of the deceased a Brown Horse belonging to Defendant was sent to the farm to keep. This horse was in the fields in the daytime and at night put in the stable and groomed and fed. I heard the deceased say so. I well remember a nag horse belonging to the defendant being on the farm for some weeks. It was in the fields. I also remember delivering to the defendant10 pigs and a quarter of beans in 1907. - Statement by Elsie Down… 'I am spinster and live at Salford and am lady help to Miss Sturges, and during the life of Miss Sturges' brother Barnard Charnock Sturges I kept his books from December 1906 to the date of his death and was cognizant of his affairs. I produce the account books showing transactions therein with the defendant. The entries from the 18th Jun 1902 to October 19th 1906 are in the handwriting of the deceased and from that date to the end they are in my handwriting, they having been dictated to me from time to time by the deceased. By the direction of the deceased in August 1908 I made out in full the account and posted it myself to the defendant. I have since this date sent three other accounts, rendered on the dates mentioned in the book. It is quite clear that the entry of 22nd Feb 1904 is an error as the deceased owed the Defendant £12 on the exchange of a Horse and the Defendant had of deceased 11 pigs of the value of £11 on account of same leaving £1 due to the Defendant and this £1 should have been taken off the account instead of added on. The particulars of claim show the amount due.
