Title
Letter from Andrew Underwood to Michael J.Jones noting the following:
- 1892 trade directory lists George Hensman, drills, dressing machine maker and brass founder at Park Hill, Ampthill which, by 1910 had become George Hensman & Son [Arthur], mechanical engineers, as it does in 1928; an undated press cutting of c.1944 lists Arthur's death stating that he had married Ethel Copperwheat and had moved to Little Holland, Clacton [Essex] where he died; the Park Hill premises were then occupied by Ampthill Glass;
- 1881 census lists Hensmans in Chapel Lane, Ampthill (almost certainly the same premises as those later called Park Hill); John, widower, aged 55 was born in Flitwick and was listed as agricultural implement maker, his son Henry, also a widower, aged 35 is similarly described, other children are Charles 14, Albert 15, both agricultural implement makers, and Rose a 13 year old scholar;
- Andrew Underwood's grandfather Albert Grimmer (1877-1960) noted Arthur Hensman in his memoirs with full details of his steam three wheeled car and his making tractors during World War One; Grimmer was a pioneer aviator and his two aeroplanes, a Blériot and a Depperlussin, were in the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden
