Notes for address by Rev.David Lewthwaite at the funeral of Doris May Mann:
- he borrowed a photograph of her father carving the lectern for Maulden Church;
- born in Ampthill in the house opposite that at which she later lived, her father being a builder;
- educated at Ampthill Public Elementary School and The Convent School, Bedford;
- she served on both Ampthill Rural and Urban District Councils, Bedfordshire County Council and was Mayor of Ampthill;
- she ran a small nursery and infant school from her home when young;
- she ran Ampthill WVS branch during World War Two;
- she also had links with Steppingley, Millbrook and Ridgmont and was friendly with Romola Russell;
- she worked for Ampthill Cheshire Home, South Bedfordshire Welfare for the Blind, Church Army and Royal National Lifeboat Institution, becoming a Life Governor of the latter in 1985, her passion probably originated in family holidays spent in Wells-next-the Sea [Norfolk]
