'My wife & I occupied the Old Wing of [Amp Ho] for two years during the period 1946-1948 as 'tenants at will' of Sir A.W. who proved a charming host & subsequently a valued friend'. Was offended by Chas's response to first letter which implied that he had 'invented' their occupation . . . ' After demob in 1946 WHB was appointed Land Agent to Bedford Lands Office with early duty to de-requisition Amp Ho '& agree compensation with Sir Anth's agent Leslie Swaffield' Sir Anth worried he might get squatters in empty part of house, so agreement drawn up by Sir A's solicitors. In 1948 posted abroad, so appointed Norman Sharpe (AGU's uncle) proxy for voting. [After Amp Ho demolished, the Betts' address transferred to the Sharpe's 77 Station Rd.] Accepts Chas's 'handsome apology . . . obvious you were indeed very close to Sir A much more than I'. On recent visit to Greenfield 'saw two fairly recent books on Ampthill by Andrew Underwood. He is a local born resident & a sort of self appointed archivist for the town . .
