Scope and Content
'The Luton by-election result was much as I expected but the majority was a trifle too large for comfort. If a town like Luton, where prosperity is greatly due to Conservative administration cannot return a Conservative member, it looks very unlikely that Labour will be defeated at a General Election, which, of course, could come in the Spring. Because of this I think I must consider in more detail the possibility of selling the Pits, the allotments, and a large part of my big field with a restriction of when building could take place. I stayed a night with my brother-in-law on my way back from Torquay, and when I told him that quite a large piece of my land was designated in the new five year plan for building, his immediate reaction was that I should sell it with a restriction such as you and I discussed as to when building could take place'.
