Scope and Content
'I know you realise that I am about at the end of my tether and, as I have reached the age of seventy, I am trying to settle up a few things before I, to use a most unpleasant expression, 'pass on'. However, now to get down to facts, I do want to settle up the question of selling land as soon as I can and I thought I had better let you know, off the record until you hear officially, that the Secretary of the Kempston Allotment Society has rung me up to say that his society would like to give up a certain amount of land that they rent from me, I believe, somewhere in the neighbourhood of 13 acres. I have asked him to let me have this in writing. I think you have had some discussion with the late lamented Mr. Stearne's successor about the future of the land in Kempston and Bedford, etc. I wonder if it would be a good thing that when I hear officially about the allotment people wanting to give up the land, you might at least be able to use that as a lever for stopping this nonsense that they must have this land for allotments. You might also be able to point out that I wish to get rid of most of my land as soon as I can. At the present rate of applying for permission to develop and the time lag before you get an answer one way or the other, I think if we have to continue trying to sell land bit by bit, my age will be somewhere between 100-120 before this is completed'.
