Letter from Charles H.Matthews to Sir Albert Richardson: "I have recently written to Lord Harris of Belmont Park, Feversham, Kent, to ask if my Wife and myself could see his famous collection of Clocks. He has replied to say that he is very pleased to show his collection to anyone who is interested, but in view of the number of burglaries that take place these days, he would like a reference from someone. I know that you do not know me very well, but at least you know that I am not a Burglar and quite respectable. Could I mention your name as one to whom Lord Harris could write for a reference as to my respectability? There are, of course, many people who know me very well and who could give a reference, but quite naturally I suppose I would like to give the name of someone important. As you know I knew Sir Anthony Wingfield very well and visited him regularly (several times a year) for over eight years, and he was a keen judge of character. I hope that you will not mind my asking this favour. I hope that you are keeping quite well. It was with great pleasure that I found the other day an old number of the Vogue House and garden Book (April, 1958) which contained an article about yourself and Avenue House, and Mr. James Fitton. The photographs of the interior of Avenue House are wonderful".
