Copy letter from R. Burman, vicar of Flitton to the secretary of the Charity Commission responding to the request of information… 'the tower battlements were reaching a danger point from decayed stone and mortar joints. The tower is built in soft green sandstone and clunch was used in belfry window wrot stone work. String course and buttress tabling were decayed. A contract was made with Messrs. Low Giddings Ltd., Station Road, Luton, to repair this tower, by repointing the joints and making good perished stone. The sum was £1750 with the proviso that after three ton of stone was used the extra work would be charged. Lengths of string course were specified in the contract. In addition architects charges were to be £7/20/- per £100. Grants in aid were asked on this amount of £1900. Work started in May 1965 and is still not finished. We have paid out the sum of £2250 to the contractor and £70 fees to the architect Mr. J.E. Chipperfield A.R.I.B.A of 3a Woburn Street, Ampthill, Bedford. This money has included £500 loan from the St.Albans Diocesan Board of Finance. In addition we have recently called up a further £400 interest free loans from parishioners. The contractor is claiming £3500. We have in hand £2000 towards the £1250 and are over £1000 short. This is every after care to foresee costs. Our sources of income are this charity about £40 per year, £70 a year from another trust from the sale of a school house, and the usual fetes, bazaars &c in a village of 600 people. The rest of the church is overdue for structural repairs. It is a serious financial situation and we need all possible help that we can find. We have been relying on this £90 and are severely disturbed not to have full use of it and would ask that at least 50% be released to us in this urgent situation'.
