Letter from Berry Christian of 384 Commercial Road East, London to John Thomas Green: "In accordance with your instructions I have nearly put the above tenements in such a thorough state of repair that I feel confident, in fact I have not the slightest doubt, but that the surveyors to the Ground Landlords (with whom I shall seek an interview - and make an appointment to meet me on the Estate) will be quite satisfied. It really seems to me an unjust demand for such low class property but as your instructions were imperative I have incurred as little expense as possible by employing three different people on the spot and personally superintending the whole of the works myself. The contracts from one man amount together to £83:15:0 and I expect to have to pay Elms about another £30, therefore I have to ask you to forward me on a/c a cheque for, say, £100 which with the rents will enable me to square matters"
