Letter from Elizabeth King at Oxton [Cheshire] to "Fanny" [her sister see HN10/270/11] "Many thanks for your nice letter I found last night waiting for me, it was very good of you to write and a great pleasure to me to receive it. We have all enjoyed our trip and were coming home hearty and strong but somehow at Dijon we were all a little upset. We cannot tell why. V & JL have quite got over it, but my stomach is not yet quite right, there was a nasty smell in the night which probably caused it but this pure air will soon but me right. I found a letter from Aveling troubles me, how is it they cannot get on at Llangollen, he tells me the money £500 George was Guarantee for me will have to be paid 1st Jany next so now will you ask your husband what is to be done with my Settlement, for I have written to George to take it out of the £5000. We are surprised to find it has been wet weather here lately we had it lovely the whole time, only one days rain whilst we were away. I had a letter from dear Anne this morning all good news, perhaps Aveling's may be a good thing for me. I was so delighted at my having bourne [sic] the fatigue of the journey so well indeed I ought to feel nothing but gratitude. Most satisfactory the arrangements for Mary T and I know a pleasure to Anne. I was troubled reading in the paper abroad the decision about the fire of the landing stage but V says wait till we hear about it. Our new cook comes in this evening"
