Letter from C.G. May of May, How & Chilver of 49 Lincolns Inn Fields, solicitors to Lady Duncombe concerning objections against Mr. Lucas using certain investments/shares as security for the intended marriage settlement and offering proposed alternatives… 'What do you say that Mr. Lucas instead of settling the shares, should covenant by the settlement to pay either during his lifetime or within 6 months after his death to the trustees of the settlement a sum equal to the value of these shares (i.e. £2000) with interest? That will not hamper him during his life and will secure you. Another way would be for Mr. Lucas to give the trustees a charge of £2000 on the house he is buying. Or, the house itself might be settled. This is on the assumption that Mr. Lucas is already in the position of a purchaser of this house. Another investment which Mr. Lucas proposes to settle consists of Madras Railway Annuities class 'A'. I do not suppose the trustees will object to taking this as it has some forty years to run. It is however a security of a 'wasting' nature, for it has no sinking fund attached to it. Believe me, Yours sincerely, C.G. May, Thanks for your letter with the list of bequests of jewellery.'
