    Copy extract of the will of John Read of Maulden, proved with a codicil on 1st Aug 1846 at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. - Appointing sons Francis & Robert and wife Mary executors and trustees. - Giving and devising all rents, profits and property in Maulden, Flitwick, Beds to wife Mary; cottage and land at Hall End, Maulden which was purchased of John Thomas Brooke to son Robert Read; inclosed arable land in or near Hall End which was purchased of Joseph Sharples to son Charles Read now in Australia (trustees to act as landlords over these real estates); £100 to son Charles; inclosed land situate and adjoining the public road near Dog and Badger Hill in Maulden which was purchased of George Cleaver and Lucy Ann his wife and also two cottages now occupied as three tenements at Maulden purchased of Joseph Ashby to son Daniel Read; Several cottages and land in or near Hall end purchased of Pain and John Charles to son Leonard Read; Sweard land and premises at East End, Flitwick, Beds to son in law Charles Giddings of Silsoe and daughter Elizabeth his wife for their natural lives and after to their children; all household goods and husbandry effects at the dwellinghouse, farm lands and premises in my occupation at Maulden and Flitwick and also the occupation of the said farm which is rented from the Duke of Bedford to wife Mary and son Leonard; all estates in Aston End, Aston, Hertfordshire as originally bequested to wife under the will of John Stringer dated 6th Aug 1842 and now in the occupation of James Tooley to wife Mary and if she dies in my lifetime to sons Francis & Robert upon trust that they convert the estate into money and divide amongst my children; inclosed land in Maulden to be conveyed to trustees to the use of son in law William Robinson Roberts of Ampthill and daughter Mary Ann his wife during their life's and after to the use of their children (This land was purchased by the testator at auction dated 13th Oct 1845 under the direction of the will of William Arnold for the sum of £365 but has not yet been conveyed to him); Residue of real and personal estate to wife Mary; £5 to eldest son Francis. - Recommend wife Mary and son Leonard to carry on the farm in equal shares as partners. - 'I further declare that the reason I have made no positive provision for my eldest son Francis is because he was and is so much better and more amply provided for by the will of his Great Uncle Francis Read, late of Maulden'. - Codicil stating that land purchased at auction for £365 has now been conveyed to the testator and should therefore be conveyed directly to William Robinson Roberts of Ampthill and daughter Mary Ann his wife.
