    Folio 161d Thomas Neghtingale senior, husbandman, of Wotton, made 25 May 1543, proved 13 July 1543. Testament Burial in the church yard of Our Blessed Lady in Wotton. To the mother church of Lincoln 2d.; to the high altar for tithes forgotten 6d.; to the light before the Sacrament 4d.; to the torches a bushel of barley; to the upkeep of the bells 6d.. To the mending of the way "called Fourtie" 2 bushel of barley. To the mending of the causeway beyond Thomas Barbors 2 bushel of barley. To his son Thomas Neghtingale of Lanthbery testator's best violet coat with sleeves. To his son William Neghtingale a black hued heifer. To Margery Aylson a cow bullock of a year old. To Robert Grenewod his russet coat with sleeves. To Thomas Wytham his violet coat without sleeves. To Mathew Marham of Elnestow his murray (morre) coat without sleeves. To son John Neghtingale his best coffer in his chamber. To Richard Chamberlyn' his buckskin doublet. Residue to his sons Richard and Thomas Neghtingale, his executors, and his son John to be Supervisor. Will He wishes to dispose of all his lands and tenements (which are set out in a deed of feoffment) as follows. All his lands and tenements are to go to his youngest son Richard Neghtingale and Grace his wife, and to the survivor for life, then to their heirs male, charged with the payment to Richard's brothers Thomas and John of £5 each, to be paid within 6 years, i.e. 13s. 4d. to Thomas within a month after next Michaelmas and 13s. 4d. likewise the next feast of the Annunciation, and so annually until the £5 has been paid, and the other £5 to be paid in the next 3 years to John Neghtingale, that is 33s. 4d. at two terms in the year. Should Richard and Gace die without heirs male, then the property is to go to testator's son Thomas and his heirs male, and if he die without heirs male, then to son John and his heirs male, in default to the right heirs of the testator, to be held of the chief lord of the fee. However, if the property should come to his son Thomas, then he is to repay to the executors of Richard and Grace the £5 that he had received, and if it comes to his son John, he too is to repay the executors of Richard and Grace his £5. Testator charges premises with an annual obit in the church of the Blessed Lady in Wotton consisting of dirige and mass at the cost of 3s. 4d. a year, that is to say 6d. to the priest and clerk, a mass penny, 2d. for wax, and the rest in bread and ale among the people then being present.
