'Bad Trade'. - Accounts showing reasons for the financial deficiency. - Observations of Alfred Ewen, official receiver on the case... 'The debtor (age 42) took over the Bedford Arms Hotel in November 1909. He states he had a free capital of about £300 at that time. For twelve years previous to 1909 he carried on business as a licensed victualler at the Chester Arms, near Newport Pagnell, the outgoing valuation being £108/16/8. The ingoing valuation of the Bedford Arms was £228 and of Dolton's Farm (which the debtor took under the same landlord thinking it would assist the business of the Bedford Arms) £318/9/- and in addition to these valuations the debtor brought stock, carriages, horses &c., to the extent of £164. He states that to enable him to find the necessary money to enter into possession he was allowed to overdraw at his bank, such overdraft being secured by a guarantor'... 'The debtor states that he first became aware of his insolvency in December last and has contracted debts since in the ordinary way of trade, but he has not opened any fresh accounts. He further states that having regard to the heavy outgoings he has not made any profit since he took the hotel. The business is being carried on until the first meeting of creditors in compliance with the wish of the lessor, who has guaranteed the estate against any loss that may arise thereby'.
