  • Title
Appeal to Quarter Sessions at Bedford drawn up by C.E. Dyer 'The Duke of Bedford owns certain Woodlands in the Parish of Woburn inside and outside the park and until about two or three years ago these woodlands were rated for the purpose of the Lighting and Watching Act 1833 as land, but since that date, by the authority of the District Auditor, these woodlands have been rated as property other than land. Land under the Lighting & Watching Act only pays one third of the rate, whereas Houses and property other than land pay the whole rate. Council advises that the Duke should first raise an objection to the valuation list and then if relief was not obtained to Quarter Sessions against the rate'. Copy of the reply from Alf T Trethewy, clerk to the Assessment Committee of the Ampthill Union to F.T. Tanqueray, solicitor to the Duke of Bedford is set out hereunder 'Referring to the Duke's of Bedford objection I am directed to inform you: 1. Committee has no power to asses the property as Agricultural Land within the Agricultural Rates Act 1896. 2. Committee has no power to make a separate assessment in the valuation list under the Lighting and Watching Act 1833'.
