Case for Opinion of Counsel: "Certain copyhold property in the Manor of Leighton Buzzard was sold by Public Auction on the 21st Decr 1886 by a person acting under a Power of Attorney given to him by the Owner & Tenant upon the Court Rolls to sell the property and do all acts necessary to transfer the property to the purchaser The Power of Attorney contains a clause "And I declare that this power is irrevocable by me for one year computed from the date hereof" The one year contemplated by the Power of Attorney is not yet expired. The power is not entered upon the Court rolls in any way. The tenant Donor of the Power died in part of November in New Zealand but news of his death did not reach in [sic?] land until January last. It appears by the Customs of the Manor a wife's right of freebench is a life interest in one third of the Copyhold hereditaments of which her husband died seised and a fine accrues to the Lord of any tenant. having in view the provisions of the 9th Section of 45 & 46 Victoria 1882 Counsel is requested to advise whether as an incumbrance upon the property or as affecting the purchaser (1) the Lord can claim a fine; (2) The widow (if any) has any right to dower; (3) Any Succession Duty attaches"
