  • Scope and Content
Dunstable Borough Police: The ancient Borough of Dunstable - an important town and a place of great antiquity - had its own Police Force consisting of a Head Constable, one Sergeant and one Constable, and this was established in 1864; but, following the passing of the Local Government Act 1888 the Force was merged with the Bedfordshire Constabulary on 1st April 1889. Records show that the post of Head Constable was abolished in Dunstable, and compensation - amount unknown - was paid to the holder.
