- Scope and ContentResolution of Quarter Sessions that as Government was willing to re-convey ground outside prison wall (except margin of 30ft) to the County, that they should purchase remainder of ground for 200. The matter to be referred to the Visiting Justices, 8 April 1879. Letter from Robt Evans Roberts to the Secretary of State for War confirming that the Visiting Justices will receive 40 - 60 military prisoners into Bedford Gaol at 1s 3d per head per day, 23 [Jan] 1873 [sic] Copy of letter accepting above offer and giving arrangements for notification of vacant cells and how the bills are to be paid, 30 Jan 1873. Letter and copy from A J O Liddell, Whitehall, [London] regarding claims of the County of Beds against the Government arising under the Prisons Act 1877 concerning compensation for cells handed over on 1 April 1878. Reference is made to the diminution of crime over the last 10 years. Average daily occupancy of cells was 41. Copy of the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette reporting on the transfer of their County Prison and the different amounts of compensation suggested by the Government and the County Authorities in regard to the Prison, 10 April 1879 Related correspondence to above claim for compensation, Feb-Apr 1879 Letter from A J O Liddell, Whitehall, 25 Feb 1879, asking whether he can assume that the Bedfordshire JPs accept the offer of the Secretary of State as in letters of 18 and 25 Feb 1879. Another letter from above saying that 3822 has been sanctioned as compensation for Beds Prison and asking the Clerk of the Peace to send deeds and documents relating to the property on which the Prison is built, 4 March 1879 With list of such deeds and documents, dating from 1788 to 1842. 2 copies - one signed. Letter of acknowledgement re deeds, 18 March 1879 Certificate by Theed Pearse, by which he agrees to hand over any documents of title 'the existence of which may be hereafter discovered'. Signed, nd.
