    Between i) Francis, Duke of Bedford ii) Jeremy Fish Palmer, Bedford, Clerk of the Peace of Bedfordshire reciting that the Grand Jury at the Assizes held on 27 July 1797 presented that the Gaol and House of Correction of the County were insufficient and inconvenient also reciting that the Justices decided on 4 Oct 1797 that a new Gaol and Bridewell should be erected i), Jn, Earl of Upper Ossory, Jn Miller and Jn Osborn, Esqs were appointed a committee to consider a proper site for the erection of a new Gaol and report back On 10 Jan 1798 the Committee reported that Dovehouse Close, the property of i), in occ Wm Sharp was the fittest spot for the purpose and i) had agreed to convey to ii) so much of sd close as would be necessary to build sd Gaol and Bridewell. Now i) agrees that before 10 Oct next [1798] he will convey to ii) -all that piece of ground being the SW corner of an old inclosure called Dovehouse Close in parish of St Paul's (1 ac 2 rds 8p) as same is now staked and agreeable to plan attached, late in occ Wm Sharp and now of Wm Campion, N & W old inclosure of Jn Hawes, Esq, S (pt) public road leading from Bedford to Bromham, S (other pt) 5 cottages of Edw Chapman, Jn Ames, Jas Bailey, Jas Maynard and Thos Rutter, E remainder of Dovehouse Close sig i) Wit: Thos Kidman Attached: 'Names of the Acting Justices for the County and Town of Bedford' June 1796 Also attached: sketch plan of site of gaol
