George Neal, labourer: 22 years old. Born and baptised at Ampthill. Never done anything to gain a settlement. Married to Ellen Chance at Marston Moretaine, 7 Oct 1833 and resident at Ampthill ever since. Unable to support himself for past 7 weeks, receiving relief at the expense of Ampthill. William Neal , Ampthill, labourer: Married to wife Sarah about 34 years ago. Sd George Neal is 2nd child. Neither have done anything to gain a settlement. My settlement and that of sd. son is at Kempston. Parents, Charles and Mary Ann Neal resided and i believe had settlement at Kempston. About 1797-8 father deserted family at Kempston and absent about 34 years. Soon after desertion two sisters and i resided at Ampthill with an Uncle and Aunt, the Aunt being my mother's sister. Uncle and Aunt paid 7s a week by the parish officers of Kempston. When father returned to Kempston he was a pauper inmate of the parish workhouse where he died. I have been relieved by the Kempston parish officers while i was at Ampthill, years 1826-1831 allowed 3s a week. William Robinson, Kempston, carrier, usually brought me the allowance; sometimes collected myself from John Saunders, Kempston overseer, and Mr Whitworth, overseer. These two men were serving the turn 3 years before 1826. In 1826 3s a week regularly allowed me. During that time resident at Ampthill. The money was brought by Wm. Robinson was paid in to Elizabeth Cooper's shop and i received goods worth 3s weekly. Willaim Robinson: Have been a carrier from Kempston to Ampthill every Thursday for last 15 years. During 1830-1832 I regularly took an allowance from the Kempston parish officers to Wm. Neal of Ampthill. Received a packet containing money from John Sanders, Kempston overseer and delivered it to Mrs Cooper. Always understood it was for Wm. Neal. John Marshall: Relieving Officer, Ampthill Union. Pauper George Neal, wife and family relieved by me since 14 Dec. last with 4s a week charged to Ampthill Parish. Gave 4s on 25 Jan inst. Will continue relief until removal. George Robinson: Clerk to the Board of Guardians , Ampthill Union. Produce certificate 26 Dec 1844, that on 14 Dec. George Neal and family became chargeable to Ampthill Incl. copy certificate.
