Letter five(pages 13-16) From Abraham, Hobart Town, to Mr HOLWELL, Baker, Church Street, Hackney, Middlesex(a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Hackney, to which Abraham had belonged). Letter to Mr HOLWELL thanking him for his letter. "Glad to hear of Mr PULLENS's safe arrival in England". Mentions the lack of letters received and "is England so reduced that even friendship cannot afford to pay her outward bound letters". Lists GOODSON,CUTHERTSON, BROWN and WINDSOR, as not replying to letters. Let the shop for £70 to Mr RULE for twelve months, "takes all the timber at an agreed price". Talks of his work in the "Ministry" "As by general consent I have the credit for being an instrument in the hand of the Lord". During quest for new farm had heard of a post for a Catechist and Schoolmaster at Great Swan Post, 80 miles east of Hobart Town. Had applied and been given the job on a fixed salary of £150 per annum and £45.12.6 for horse forage. Mrs BIGGS to teach reading and needlework for £25. New house and schoolroom to be built-taking several months. Asked to fill other duties at Glenorchy but is now going to Green Tree Hill(a place holding a large number of prisoners on the Governor's property). Appointment only six miles from farm and is considering taking this position rather than the one at Swan Port. Gives details of his duties. "Depression and failures in business in Hobart Town in the last twelve months" Talks of his own worries that could have ended in insanity if he had not given up his complex business. Happy that the "Wesleyans are doing extensive good in VD Land, more than all the other denominations united". Had been away from home for three years. Have not forgotten friends in Little Brickhill, although they seem to have been forgotten, having received only one letter. Mr and Mrs BRENT were bearers of this letter and had been a long time in the colony. Were sailing in the ship DERWENT, Captn RIDDLE. Kindest love to Mrs HOLWELL and family.
