Message reads: 'Tuesday 4.45 pm. My darling little Boy Thank you my old man for the lovely sweets I am so pleased to hear that you are better and I trust will continue so now. And now my old man, I am going to talk to you a little bird has just told me that all the 'old maids, girls and others, are bringing you papers, games, etc, that's nice going's on you know I cannot allow that, so I shall have to talk to them when I come home again, and you also, but never mind, I am glad to hear that they come to enquire after you. Have put a mark on the other side, were Beech Road is. As I was going into the town this afternoon I met a company of soldiers with their gas masks and helmets on, they did look so funny. Thank you my old man for your nice long letter, have sent you a few foreign Stamps to put in your book, and one for Toby, I hope they are different ones to what you have. Trusting that my old boy is better today, and with heaps of love, ships, trains, motor lorrys, aeroplanes, wagon and wheelbarrows loads of kisses from your loving Dad.'
