    Deposition:John Holtham, Lillington (Warwick). Came from London with Randall and another; carries pistols because he is in debt and fears arrest; has no grey mare now; bought brown nag swapped at Aylesbury from Mr.Browne; sometimes goes by name Cooke because his mother married 2nd husband of that name. The Examinacon of John Holtham late of Lillington in the County of Warwicke taken before Sr Francis Wingate Knt one of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County of Bedford aforesaid the 14th day of October Anno dni 1683 This Examint sayth that he came from Lillington about 8 or 10 dayes since to London where he intended to get into some Gentlemans service and lodg'd in Newton Street in Holbourne at the signe of the Kings head, and that his money being spent he came out of London on Thursday last from the white heart Inne in Holbourn in company with two men one of which he hath known 2 or 3 years and thinks his name is Randall who he this Examint desired to goe with him into Warwicksheir promiseing him to beare his charges for his company, the other he knew not nor his business nor whether he was goeing, but that they all three came out of London together to Uxbridge and lay all night at the signe of the Crown there, the next night they came to Alesbury where they lay at the signe of the Beare, and yesterday to Laighton faire; and that the reason of his carrying pistolls abt him is because he's in debt and afraid of arrests, he sayth he hath not had a Gray Mare this yeare & halfe, and that the brown Nagg he Swap't at Alesbury he bought of one Mr Browne of Adderson in Warwicksheir about 10 weeks since, This Examint alsoe sayth that this day fortnight he was in London & continued there 4 or 5 dayes after, and that the reason why he sometimes goes by the name of Cooke is because his Mother Marryed a second husband of that name but that his right name is John Holtham And further sayth not.
