    Deposition:John Read, Stratford-on-Avon, lab. 4 October 1680. After being at sea came to Newmarket to work at Red Lion; hostler gave him 2d. a day, so he ran away, taking bridle. Jn. Clarke and he stole bacon from Widow Russell's. John Clarke, Stratford-on-Avon, lab. As above. Was whipped at Bury The Examination of John Bead of Stratford upon Avon in the County of Warwick Laborer taken this fowerth day of October 1680 before us William Boteler Esqr & Edmund Gardner Esqr twoe of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County of Bedford This Examint saith he came form home about Eight monthes since & went from thence to London intendinge for the Sea & went into a Shipp St. John Robinson Captaine & from thence went to Yarmouth & from thence intended home againe & came to Newmarkett to the Redd Lyon & worked there & because the Hostler would not give him above twoe pence a day he & his Companion, came away & brought a bridle (which was taken about him) from thence & comeinge to Oakely lodged att one widdow Russells on Satterday night last & on Sunday morninge about Eight of the Clock this Examints companion viz: John Clarke went into the house of the said widdow Russell in att the window & gave this Examinant a peace of bacon out of the said house. The Examinacon of John Clarke of Stratford upon Avon in the County of Warwick Laborer taken this fowrth day of October 1680 before us William Boteler Esqr & Edmund Gardner Esqr twoe of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County of Bedford. This Examint saith he came from home about Eight monthes since & went from thence to London & went to Sea with one Captaine Holmes & went to Yarmouth from thence intended home againe & came to Bury & was there whipped & from thence to Newmarkett to the Redd Lyon & worked there for want of pay he & his Companion the said John Read came away & brought the bridle (which was taken about the said John Read) from thence & comeinge to Oakley lodged at one Widdow Russells on Satterday night last & on Sunday morninge about eight of the Clock he this Examint went into the house of the said widdow Russell in att the window & gave his Companion the abovenamed John Read a peece of bacon out of the said house.
